I spoke with Nyah I. Collier MPH, BSN, RN about how we can each learn to take control of our health and make the most of our medical appointments.

Nyah Collier brings nearly a decade of diverse nursing experience to her role as a clinical research nurse at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a global leader in clinical research. Currently, Nyah is one of the key members of Dr. Adriana Marques’ Lyme Disease research team, where she is actively involved in studying both Lyme Disease patients and healthy individuals, with the goal of supporting the development of a tick alert vaccine.

Prior to her work at NIH, Nyah's career path has been marked by a commitment to serving various underserved communities. She has worked in adult homeless shelters, collaborated with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, cared for patients in an inpatient medical-surgical oncology unit, and provided compassionate support in an Alzheimer’s and dementia long-term care setting. Additionally, Nyah briefly taught chemistry labs to non-science majors at American University, showcasing her dedication to both healthcare and education.

Nyah holds a master's degree in epidemiology with a concentration in infectious diseases and population-based care from Drexel University, complementing her bachelor's degree in nursing from George Mason University. Known for her advocacy and education efforts, Nyah is deeply passionate about empowering her patients and the broader community with medical knowledge. She possesses a unique ability to communicate complex medical concepts in a clear and accessible manner.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Nyah enjoys exploring new culinary experiences in the DC metropolitan area, spending quality time with her family and friends, traveling to new destinations, and remaining active through various fitness activities (i.e. weightlifting, group sports, etc.).
